Honestly, I was a bit muddled at the beginning because I thought it was set in a fantasy world, and the worldbuilding was confusing me terribly because it was undoubtedly on the weak side for so early in the novel where things should ideally be exposed and established. This book is set in 19th century Denmark – and yes, it is a loose retelling of The Little Mermaid, but it was quite different to what I was expecting.

I thought it was a mermaid-based fantasy book (and I know other people think it is too), but it isn’t. So I have no doubt that people will go into this book expecting to read a certain kind of story, but the fact is that this is probably not the story you think it is. Sea Witch is somewhat of an anticipated novel, in no small part due to the fact it has a gorgeous cover and the fact that mermaid books are very en vogue this year. I was provided with a copy in exchange for an honest review. Now Evie will do anything to save her friend’s humanity, along with her prince’s heart-harnessing the power of her magic, her ocean, and her love until she discovers, too late, the truth of her bargain. She can’t stay in Havnestad, or on two legs, unless Evie finds a way to help her. And, as the two girls catch the eyes-and hearts-of two charming princes, Evie believes that she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after.īut her new friend has secrets of her own. That her own magic wasn’t so powerless after all.
